Needleism - An Original Art Movement

Needleism is an original art movement I developed in 2016 as a consequence of my BA (hons) Fine Art undergraduate studies. Firstly, I pour paint directly from the containers in a gesticulatory fashion, creating a near conductor like series of mark making motions. Then, using both ends of a brush, I blend the paint to create a marbling effect whereby the amalgamation of material is partial, and thus does not allow for each colour to merge entirely.

Following this, I blend the paint further using a needle, until I create marbled painted designs that are extremely detailed. Succeeding this I allow the painting to dry completely. Once this initial layer has dried, I take the painting and using a very fine needle, add a superimposed layer of pointillism stylised dots over the marbled painting, varying both the colour palette and design with each piece to create unique fine artworks that cannot be replicated.

The result are fine art paintings that appear to alter according to the observer, the degree of light reflecting off them and the distance from which they are seen. My artwork is related to Hubble Space Telescope photography as well as Quantum Physics concepts such as the Observer Effect, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, Complementarity and the Holographic Universe theorem, by which the nature of reality is ever changing, fluid, ephemeral, whilst simultaneously founded and dependent upon the consciousness of an observer.
